Celebrating the Helpers

I’ve always loved Fred Rogers’ famous quote: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

This is one of the things I love about doing this work in Ukraine: I have the honor to meet so many people who help, and work together with generosity to make their help go even farther.

@hull4ukraine has provided another gorgeous collection of children’s books to share with young people across this country. This collection is thanks to the generosity of dozens of people in England, purchasing and collecting titles for all age groups. You can really feel the love that went into this curation.

But collecting is only the first step. @jeeps.for.peace joined in once again, offering to carry the books over in their convoy of vehicles they are donating to the military. I got to meet them at their destination point where they handed over the vehicles to the soldiers who would take them out east. It’s hard to describe this feeling to be in such company.

And John, one of the drivers from the UK, not only agreed to carry the books from @hull4ukraine; he then went to his local libraries and collected even more books to bring along! And what started out as 5 boxes turned into 11.

From this group, I immediately pulled out a collection for new shelter opening later this month for internally displaced people. That group of 100 books will be the start of their library. 100 more titles are being sorted now for a country-wide book swap event hosted by the public library system this summer.

More news to come. But for now, I’m just grateful for this huge team of people who do these amazing things every day: donors, drivers, organizers, librarians, humanitarians, soldiers, all over the world… and all tipping the global moral scale to the Good.
